Welcome to the Old Mill Barn
Barns of all types, shapes and sizes are scattered throughout the countryside all around the world. Whether to store hay or grain, house livestock, shelter equipment or just be a focal point to the pastural picture of the surrounding landscape, each sits as a silent sentinel of the farm. But the silence is somewhat misleading because in essence, every barn has a story to tell. Indeed, if these walls could talk here at the Old Mill Barn, they would tell stories of a pre-developed landscape with dense forests of brother and sister trees. Dating back hundreds of years and long before Wagner Berry Farm was born into existence, trees of all types and sizes grew straight and strong.
Inside the Old Mill Barn, you will find these trees today. Each milled piece of lumber represents a tree that once grew here on the farm. Oak, maple, cedar and ash all mixed together in unison to make up the walls that surround you. Every tree felled on the farm, milled on the premises, cut to the exact length, and placed in its present resting place with precision by the current steward of this property. The barn itself is a testament to symbiotic relationship between nature and good stewardship of the land.
The whispers you hear on the northern side of the barn are from the bricks in the walkway. The walkway is a throwback to the streets of old with a classic and almost European flare. The bricks themselves have stories to tell with some dating back 75 years or more. The tell of a simpler time unburdened by technology and long before social media robbed us of social interactions. Like the lumber, each brick laid by hand and crafted into place.
If you follow the laughter across the brick walkway, you will find its source to be a stone wall. The stones, like the wood in the barn, were all harvested here on the farm. The fossiliferous limestone that makes up the wall laughs at the concept of age from the bricks and the lumber. Their history dates back millions of years and the stories they tell are of silent seas and oceans that covered what is not Wagner Berry Farm. The world that they were born into was completely wild and free, untouched by the hands of man. If you look closely at the wall, you will still the evidence of that life that existed embedded in the fossil record of the rock.
We hope you enjoy your stay here at the Old Mill Barn on the Wagner Berry Farm. We hope you laugh and make great memories for all of your tomorrows by pause in serenity of this place to remember the yesterdays that brought us here. And maybe, in the half-light of the evening when the night is settling in over the day, just maybe you will hear the whispers of the past--and the stories they tell will be some of you own.
